I am studying how stress in elastic silicone materials can be used to dynamically tune surface properties for the active control over chemical reactions (e.g., heterogeneous nucleation and surface coupling reactions) and other physical processes (particle assembly, adhesion, and actuation).  The ability to rapidly and reversibly stretch and release elastic materials allows us to change both the density of surface molecules and the location of objects resting on their surface.  We have leveraged these capabilities, in ways no one else has reported, to develop and demonstrate applications and systems for studying surface reactions. I’ve focused my research specifically on the control over hard/rigid materials, specifically crystalline minerals and commodity thermoplastics. This research has led to a better understanding of the chemistry at elastic silicones and has been applied to a variety of fields including, microfluidics, micro/nanoscale assembly, materials synthesis, particle separation, micromanufacturing, soft electronics, crystal engineering, and soft robotics.
